Most Pokémon are stronger than people. Most Pokémon also enjoy the idea of battling and getting stronger. With a trainer, people can do all kinds of things that they wouldn't be able to without their partners and Pokémon can reach their maximum potential with the help of their trainer.

Even if you don't battle, Pokémon still count as your... Friends to some people. Or your coworkers. Or maybe a family member. It depends on the person.
